When it comes to getting a good insurance claim, it is not what company you are with nearly as much as what kind of adjuster you have. There are local adjusters that work directly for the insurance company, and then there are national independent representatives that come in as needed. Which one you get will make the difference between getting a satisfactory claim and getting a small repair.
The local adjusters are on a salary, paid directly by the insurance company, so it is in their best interest to keep claims low, and move requests through quickly. The independent adjuster is free-lance, and paid by commission, so he is motivated to get you everything you are entitled to. Consequently, claims settled by an independent adjuster tend to be larger, and faster than those paid out by a local one.
Local adjusters also tend to be more diverse, working with auto claims, boat claims, Minnesota storm repairs and the like, while independent adjusters are more industry specific. They often times travel to areas that have recently had some large, natural disaster in order to facilitate claims and help people get back to normal as soon as possible. They will be more likely to understand how claims work together, and the importance of authorizing a seemingly unrelated repair, because they understand that without this, the overall job might not be done completely right.
Another issue to watch out for is understanding the difference between damage, and neglect. Many people think that just because their home had a small amount of damage, they are entitled to a complete remodeling of their home. Obviously, this is not the case. The insurance industry is very aware of these actions, and has safety measures in place to help keep these issues in check. In order to get the best claim that you are entitled to, make sure you have an independent adjuster, be nice, and don’t expect a completely new house. If you do this, you will probably get at least 2 out of 3 in return.
