When we have hail storms and damage like we did this spring, there is always a rash of door to door contractors, looking for work after the winds die down. Many times these people are transient, who use someone else’s MN license, while they promise to share the profits with them. The problem is that these people are often not included in the insurance coverage, so if they should slip and fall off the roof, you can be held liable.

Often times they ask if they can give you a “free estimate”, but before you agree to anything, make sure you know who you are dealing with. Ask to see a legitimate MN contractor’s license. If it is theirs, it will have an affiliated insurance policy ensuring that they are covered if something should go wrong.

Many of these types of storm chasers will even rent temporary office space in the city that has just experienced some damaging weather, and stick around only until the work holds out, then they close shop and move on. Sometimes they are real roofers; sometimes they are painters, out of work, looking for anyway to make money during the off season.

Before you sign anything, make sure you are working with a reputable, local company that has been in business for at least 10 years. This way you can be sure that if something should go wrong, you will have some legitimate recourse. Never sign anything until you read through it completely. Transient companies often have clauses that stipulate all legal action must take place in their home town that happens to be on the other side of the country. Make sure all estimates are detailed, spelling out exactly what will be completed, and work in conjunction with your insurance agent to help protect you from some items you may not completely understand.
