When another Minnesota winter rolls around here in the Twin Cities, you might see your energy prices rising. This is a problem for a lot of homeowners. If you find that you’re having a hard time finding ways to keep your heat in, then it might be time to consider some of these options. We have compiled ways for you to go through your home and winter proof it so that you stop losing all of your heat.
- Use draft stoppers throughout the home to ensure that you’re not letting cold air infiltrate under the doors from one room to another. The attic is also another place where you can let the air in from the outside or lose heat from inside your home. Keeping your attic ventilated and cool is important to prevent ice dams, but you don't want that cold air moving from the attic into the rest of your home. By better insulating the attic, you’re able to keep more heat in your home during the winter (as well as keeping it cooler in the summer).
- Caulk or other weatherstripping material used around the windows and doors helps stop the drafts from coming in. But often this is just a quick fix and not a permanent one.
- If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, it may be time to consider more energy-efficient windows and doors. Purchase new windows and doors when older ones are not doing the job they are meant to do. You're going to end up spending a lot more to heat and cool your home with those old drafty windows and doors, compared to just purchasing newer, more energy-efficient ones. Stop throwing your money out the window (or door) and invest in new ones!
- If it's time for a new roof or replacing your siding, look for energy-efficient products.
