Once you (or your roofing company) have completed your fall roof inspection and you have found that you have a leaking roof, there are a few simple things that you can do before hiring a licensed MN roofing contractor to make repairs.

  • The first thing you will want to do is move all of your valuable things (especially any electronic equipment) below the leaking area.
  • The next step is to do a quick inspection of your gutters.  Stopping that leak may be as simple as cleaning out any debris that has been jamming up your gutter or downspout.  If you do find that your gutters need cleaning, use heavy duty gloves and remove any debris. and then with a high pressure hose to flush your gutters clean.
  • If you noticed that your roof may be leaking due to a flashing gap or even a nail hole, you may be able to apply neoprene rubber flashing cement to that damaged area.  After 24 hours of letting the cement dry in dry weather, recheck the leaking area to ensure that it has been properly sealed.  That being said, we don't recommend that homeowners attempt repairs themselves with metal flashing.
  • If you found that you are missing just a few shingles or some of your shingles have been damaged, you may want to replace them yourself if you're an avid do-it-yourselfer.
If you found that there is already damage to the underlayment of your roof, it is very important to contact a roofing contractor.  This isn't something we recommend a homeowner tackle.  It is crucial to properly repair the underlayment before replacing any of the exterior roofing materials.  A trained roofing professional will know exactly what needs to be done; you may not.  What's under the roofing material itself is an important part of the roof working the way it was meant to.
