March is definitely coming in like a lion, what with more rain and snow in the forecast. Minneapolis weather is hard on your roof, but how do you know if it needs repair? If you notice any of these things, it’s time for an inspection.
Leaks from the Attic Two things usually cause roof damage in this state: severe weather and ice dams. If you notice any leaks in your attic after a powerful storm or during the yearly melt/thaw cycle, your roof may need attention.
Interior Paint Problems Has paint begun peeling or blistering on interior or exterior walls? That happens when moisture is trapped in the walls. Poor ventilation is usually the culprit. If this is a problem, make sure your attic ventilation is adequate, and that your kitchen, bathrooms as well as your clothing dryer all vent freely to the outside.
Stains, Mold and Mildew If you ever notice a mysterious stain appear on your ceilings or walls, you may have water leakage. If mold or mildew shows up, you definitely have a water problem. This is often due to a problem with the underlayment under the roof shingles or poor attic ventilation.
Siding Decay When they’ve been exposed to moisture for a long time, the sheathing or siding on your home begin decaying. In order to prevent this from happening, install a vapor barrier between the insulation and the house’s interior.
Shingle Problems Missing or peeling shingles mean it’s time for a new roof. At this point, they’re no longer doing their jobs and must be replaced.
Dark Spots on the Roof Although these spots don’t necessarily mean you have to replace the roof completely, it does reduce curb appeal. They happen when fungus, algae or mold grow on the surface. You can always clean the shingles, but that will shorten your roof’s life if it's not done properly.
Higher Energy Bills If your heating and cooling bills climb during hot and cold seasons, this could mean that your HVAC system is working overtime. One of the big reasons this happens is due to roof or attic problems.
