As the weather here in the Twin Cities begins to warm up, many homeowners are considering installing new windows and exterior doors to freshen up the look of their homes as well as adding to its energy efficiency. If that's you, we have some tips for you before you make your decisions.
Tips for Choosing Replacement Windows & DoorsThe four things you want to keep in mind before purchasing new windows and doors are known as ‘the four S’s.” Considering each one will help you determine which type of windows and doors are best suited for your home and for you.
- Style: The style of the door or windows that you should put throughout your home all depends on the design of the home that you have. You wouldn’t want to put an antique door on an high-tech modern house, and the same goes for the windows. The window styles should also suit the needs of the homes occupants. For example, sliding or casement windows can provide more ease use for older individuals than double-hungs. There is a style of window that works the best for you and your home.
- Scale: Consider both the size of your home and the scale of its architectural elements. You do not want something overly big to be placed on such a small home, and you do not want something that is tiny within a huge wall. Choose windows and doors whose overall scale fits in with your home's scale. For example, a very wide front entry area might call for double entry doors with sidelights, but that same configuration would look out of place on a small cottage.
- Sizes: Size works in the same way as scale. You should choose the scale and size of the window or door that fits the home, and not something that does not work with it. Taking up too much space or too little can create problems with the overall look and feel of the home.
- Shape: Shape is a fun way to go about choosing windows; however you do not want to go too off the grid. There are so many shapes to choose from, all that can boost the curb appeal of your home. There are round and oval windows, cathedral or arch-top, triangular, and more. A specialty shape window is a great way to add interest to an area. For example, an oval window can work well in a stairwell or beside a front door in an entry. Sometimes specialty shape windows are used above picture windows or a combination of windows to create an overall wall of windows.
