A roof is much more than the roofing and the underlying materials that are used to construct it. A roof provides major protection for a home, and the different materials and systems need to work together properly to provide it. Making sure your roof is in the best possible shape includes being aware of which areas of the roof are going to cause the most problems.
Some of these spots are easy to notice if something is wrong with them, and some can be repaired by homeowners with a little DIY skills. Of course, if those roof repairs seem too difficult, it is important to call in a licensed roofing contractor so you don’t hurt yourself, someone else, or your home during the process.
Steel Soffit & Fascia SystemCommon Roofing Trouble Spots
Fascia
This is the roof trim and the front board that you see along the roof line. It can be made up of sheet metal, vinyl, or wooden boards. The fascia provides a protective layer between the edge of the roof and the outside elements.
Moisture getting into or under fascia boards is one of the most common things that can happen. It's a good idea to regularly check for rot or damage to your fascia.
Flashings
These seal the edges of the roofing materials. It is what frames the perimeters of the roof, walls, valleys and other areas of the roof. This helps to seal voids in the many areas of the roof system. Flashing is also installed around anything protrudes out of the roof, such as vents, chimneys, and skylights. This material is usually aluminum or steel. Sometimes the flashing can become loose. By tacking it back down, you can protect the home from leaks.
Soffits
The soffit is the horizontal surface right under the overhanging section of the roof or eave. This is below the fascia and rafters of the roof. (Soffit and fascia work together as a unit usually.) Soffits usually have small openings that promote air circulation and ventilation under the roof and into the attic space. Most soffits are made from vinyl because of exposure to moisture. Wood and metal are sometimes used as well. It is important to look for evidence of pests or cracks in the soffits, as well as clogged vents.
Fixing problem areas on your roof as soon as they're detected is important. Whether you repair the issues or you have a professional roofing company come out to repair them, having it done quickly is essential. Always make sure your roof is in the best shape possible.
