Knowing some of the lingo that is used to refer to the efficiency ratings is even better. Here are some of the words you should know when choosing which windows are the most efficient.

VT – Visible Transmittance – This is the amount of light the window lets into the home. The higher the VT, the more light comes in through the window, which affects how bright your room will be.  Choosing high VT ratings is important for rooms that will get a lot of daytime use but won't be as important for rooms such as bedrooms that are occupied mostly at night. U-Factor – This is one of the most common words you will see when it comes to window ratings. This shows how well the window insulates and keeps the outside air where it belongs, while keeping your indoor air inside.  The lower this number is, the better its insulating properties.  (This is not to be confused with R-value, where the higher the number the better.) AL – Air leakage of the window. This measures how much air is let into the home. Some air is fine for good flow and to ensure that the window works as it should. The lower the number, the less air comes into the home. Condensation Resistance – The higher the number, up to 100, the less condensation the window will develop. You may want more or less depending on where you live and the specifics of the home.
