As a licensed Minnesota roofing company, we pay attention to trends in our industry, for a number of reasons. New technology might be emerging that we could consider. Or a particular type or style or color of roofing might be gaining in popularity. In that case, we want to be prepared for high demand, which might mean shortages or price increases. But mostly we want to stay on top of things so that our roofing installation and repair crews are ready to meet the needs and requests of our customers.
With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the current roofing trends.- Light colored roofing: While we don't see dark colors of roofing materials like charcoal, black, or dark brown going away, homeowners seem to be making the move to lighter colors like pale grey, tan, and even off-white. Part of what's driving this is a desire to have a softer look to a home rather than a stark one. It may be that the trend in contrasts is fading. Another benefit of light-colored roofing is that it is more energy-efficient. Dark colors tend to absorb sunlight while light colors reflect it away. That makes for a cooler attic space and a cooler home overall.
- Rooftop solar panels: As homeowners become more conscious of the need to reduce their energy footprint and create a greener lifestyle, including a solar power source on their own rooftop is gaining in popularity. We've already done a number of these projects in the Twin Cities area. In fact, we've partnered with solar installers to put in a new roof in conjunction with a solar array, coordinating our efforts to avoid disrupting each other's work process. (You can read about one of our projects in this blog article - click here.)
- Cool roofing: This one goes along with the first trend, light colored roofing. Some roofs are considered to be 'cool' because of their material, others because of their color. But when you combine both, you get a really cool roof. Light-colored steel or other metal roofing is about the best there is for Minnesota homeowners interested in cool roofing.
- Metal roofing: While metal roofs have been around for centuries in Europe, and for quite awhile in the U.S. (mainly on pole buildings, barns, and other ag structures), in recent years it has had a surge in popularity. Builders, architects, and designers alike love it, and homeowners are starting to find out why. As a licensed Twin Cities roofing contractor specializing in the installation of steel and other metal roofs, we can give you lots of reasons to check it out.
