Winter Is a Great Time to Have Our Seamless Steel Siding Installed in the Twin Cities
There are certain types of remodeling which simply cannot be done during a Minnesota winter. Just as cold can hamper installation of asphalt roofing, many siding materials shouldn't be put in at this time of year. Case in point: vinyl siding. The ideal temperature window for vinyl siding is above 50°. Below that you start to deal with it contracting (i.e., shrinking). Most building materials expand or contract as the temperature goes up and down. So vinyl siding that's installed when it's cold will start to expand as the temperature rises. What that means is siding that fit perfectly when it was installed will now buckle around window and door casings. Plus, unlike steel siding, vinyl siding can completely freeze solid, making it very susceptible to cracking. And even wood siding can be problematic when it gets extremely cold, because wood absorbs moisture. That moisture can freeze, causing cracking. Those cracks will provide a means of entry for both cold air and moisture behind your siding, meaning potential problems with the walls underneath as well as impact on your energy usage to keep your home comfortable. One plus to steel is that it changes very little with temperature, and because it isn't porous, water absorption isn't an issue.Another thing to keep in mind is the simple logistics of exterior remodeling in winter. Your landscaping for the most part has either died back or is dormant, so there are fewer issues with that. Also, once the ground is frozen and there is a protective blanket of snow, your grass won't be affected by foot traffic and ladders.
Finally, at this time of year most people assume remodeling companies are on hold until spring, so you won't be competing with a lot of other people to get on our schedule. Our siding installation crews don't mind a little cold and snow. As you can see from the photo, they know how to dress for the weather!
