If you're considering a metal roof for your home, Kassel & Irons, Arrowwood/Edco and Metro all provide the high quality roofing materials you’re after. When it comes to whether or not you want to make the transition from asphalt shingles to metal roofing, you have many things to consider. Since residential roofing is something many homeowners in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area aren't familiar with, here are the answers to FAQ, so you can rest easy knowing you’re making the right decision on the switch.
Q: Will my cell phone service be affected because I have a metal roof on my home? A: You probably already use your cell phone inside buildings that have metal roofs. Consider the many places you shop, eat and visit on a daily basis. Many of these places may have metal roofing on them, and it does not affect your cell phone service a bit. Whether your service is spotty now or great, it will most likely be the same when your metal roof is installed. Q: What will happen to one of these metal roofs if it was thundering and lightning? A: Many people have the common misconception that metal roofing is dangerous and louder than asphalt shingles. While this myth is going around, it is not true. The noise from the storm will not be any more louder inside your home and it is not any more likely to get struck from lightning than the asphalt roof that you previously had. In fact, in case of a lightning strike, your home is safer with a metal roof because it won't catch fire like an asphalt or wood shake roof would. Q: What about hail and rain on the top of the metal roof? A: The rain and hail will not damage the roof on your home. (The metal roofing we install is rated to withstand up to a 3" hailstone, and the likelihood of getting hail like that in the Twin Cities is minimal.) It will not sound any louder than it normally would, and everyone inside will be protected from the outside elements - perhaps even more so with a metal roof than a shingled one. Q: Is it protected against fires? A: Any outside fires will not be able to burn through the roof on the home. It is made from non-combustible material, which makes it ideal to place on homes that are in forest fire areas. It's also great for that lake property in the woods. Q: Can I walk on it? A: While we don't recommend homeowners going up on their roofs because of safety issues, our metal roofs are extremely durable, meaning you or anyone else is able to walk on it without doing any damage. However, it is slippery since metal is a smooth surface. No one should ever go on the roof without the proper safety tips and precautions.
