The first line of defense from water damage for most Minneapolis homes are the gutters. And after the somewhat wet spring we had here, it could be time to give yours a good inspection before more severe weather comes our way.  When gutters start to fail, it may be difficult to determine when it’s time to replace your gutters or if you can mend them. If you notice any of the below signs in your current gutters, it’s probably time to get a new set installed.  1. Hanging, Loose Gutters It goes without saying that gutters that aren’t securely attached to your home can’t guide water properly, but they can also pose a hazard to anyone who happens to be passing below. 2. Cracked, Rusting or Slouching Gutters which are rusting or slouching look pretty bad on any home, but they also function poorly. When gutters are deformed, they don’t allow water to flow properly, which encourages back-ups. And that can cause damage at the roof edge.  When they’re cracked and rusting, rainwater dribbles out of the gutters down the side of the house; it can then get into the foundation instead of where it’s supposed to go. 3. Wall Damage If you happen to notice discoloration or other damage to your exterior paint job or siding, it may be caused by water escaping from faulty gutters. 4. Clogs Most homeowners know to clean their gutters at least once a year, or more when there are a lot of trees in the area. However, if the system has some sort of structural problem, no amount of cleaning will clear all of the clogs. 5. Pooling Water or Leaks When water collects near downspouts instead of draining away, your gutters may be a likely suspect. Even when you don’t notice pooling, but there is water inside, that means the drainage system isn’t doing its job, and it’s time to look at updating it.
